CBD oil in pregnancy

In case you are wondering if CBD oil can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, here is a little clue: CBD oil, unlike medicinal CBD that is used in studies, is approved as a cosmetic in Germany. Since the law does not allow it to be offered as a food supplement, it should not be ingested. However, in other countries such as Great Britain, CBD is already permitted as a food supplement and can be consumed. To avoid confusion, we explicitly note that our statements refer to CBD in general and not to individual oils or products.

CBD oil in pregnancy. The cannabinoids in the hemp plant bind to the cannabinoid receptors of the endocannabinoid system, a type of regulatory system in the body that intervenes in various processes, such as the sensation of pain, emotions or appetite. Scientists suspect that the influence of cannabinoids on the endocannabinoid system can relieve nausea and vomiting, but also cause them.

studies have shown that THC may be helpful for drug-induced nausea and vomiting chemotherapy. Until now, it has hardly been studied whether CBD alone can exert this antiemetic effect. In human clinical trials administered high doses of CBD, side effects such as nausea were observed.

On the other hand, animal studies showed that CBD, depending on the dose, possibly activates the so-called 5-HT1A receptors indirectly and therefore reduces the release of serotonin (5-HTP). Therefore, CBD could also be effective against chemotherapy-induced symptoms. It is not clear whether CBD can have an effect against nausea and vomiting when these discomforts are not caused by chemotherapy.

To explain: Various drugs (cystotic) are used in the course of chemotherapy. The body evaluates them as toxins and tries to excrete them through vomiting. The corresponding transmission of commands takes place through various messenger substances that bind to special receptors. A particularly important role here is played by the messenger substance serotonin, which is mainly stored in the mucosal cells of the small intestine and is released when the cells are damaged, for example by cystitis. Activation of serotonin (5-HT1A) receptors then triggers vomiting.

First of all, it must be said that there are no studies in which cannabinoids such as THC or CBD have been administered to pregnant women or nursing mothers and the effect on the embryo or newborn has been investigated. This would be very unethical and would involve a significant risk for both mother and child.

The results of animal and laboratory studies are inconsistent and partly contradictory. It is considered safe that cannabis drug ingredients can enter the circulation of the fetus through the placenta. It cannot be ruled out or confirmed whether this disturbs prenatal development or influences the function of the central nervous system of the fetus.

Results from human studies
The studies found, among other things, evidence of an increased risk of the following problems in newborns if mothers had used cannabis during pregnancy:
-low birth weight
-anemia (blood anemia)
-need for intensive medical monitoring

In school-age children, alterations in attention, impulse control, and visual memory were observed.
However, the researchers also note that it is difficult to separate the effects of cannabinoids from those of alcohol, cigarettes and illicit drugs, which were also frequently used by the women observed. This is because it is not clear whether the women interviewed had made truthful statements about the use of these substances.

Results from animal models
In animal experiments, brain, eye and facial malformations were observed in pregnant mice after administration of synthetic cannabinoids to newborns, so it should also be mentioned here that synthetic cannabinoids interact even more strongly with cannabinoid receptors than natural cannabinoids from hemp. Furthermore, the higher the dose, the more pronounced the malformations.

In most of the studies used to investigate the effects of cannabinoids, synthetic cannabinoids, THC alone, or cannabis with all cannabinoids, i.e. also CBD, were used. The The effect of CBD alone during pregnancy has barely been investigated until now.

An interesting study on cell lines is interesting. . Researchers claim that placental development involves the following strictly controlled processes:

-Cell proliferation (rapid tissue growth)
-Apoptosis (cell death)
-Autophagy (“recycling plant” of cells)
-Migration/invasion of trophoblast cells (trophoblast: layer of cells responsible for feeding the fetus).

CBD interferes with these processes, which, according to researchers, may impact the outcome of the pregnancy.

Pregnant women are not only responsible for their own bodies, but also for their unborn children. Therefore, in order not to take unnecessary risks and due to the lack of sufficient studies, it is not recommended to take CBD oil in pregnancy.
In the event that a pregnant woman suffers from severe nausea, there are much lower risk options that you should consult with your gynecologist.

In addition to CBD oil in the form of drops that you put under the tongue, there are other products with CBD. For example, massage oils enriched with CBD. Also in this case, the recommendation is to avoid these products during pregnancy. This is because there is a chance that the ingredients will enter the bloodstream and endanger the health of the baby.

There is no doubt that pregnancy is not all joy. Many women suffer from various ailments. Before purchasing and taking medications, medicinal herbs or food supplements, every pregnant woman should first consult her gynecologist so as not to endanger the fetus.

The effect of cannabidiol (CBD) has not yet been sufficiently researched, especially with regard to its use during pregnancy and in the event that the mother is breastfeeding her newborn. Therefore, the use of CBD should be avoided.
